The truth about Future Proofing – It’s for Commercial Buildings too
I truly believe that we can build a better world. Everything really has to start with us and that sometimes you have to spend money to make money.
Many people who’ve been following me for a while would assume that my background is in housing. It really isn’t, my background is in commercial buildings. I started off my career in this field as an Automation Technician for Honeywell. I then worked as a consultant doing commissioning, retro commissioning and energy auditing. By the time I started my own consulting business, I could walk into any building and find opportunities for improvement that both save money and improve comfort of people within the building.
So why focus on housing?
Well in short everyone needs a place to live, but not everyone manages their work place. If people can understand that doing things better with housing can save them hundreds of dollars a year on their bills, then it makes it much easier to convince building managers that they can often save several thousand dollars per year in their operational costs. Awareness and mindfulness are the keys to progress in all areas of life and business. Sometimes the most obvious things are right in front of us.
All around me I see the inefficiency in both our commercial buildings and our houses. My training and experience has shown me that we are capable of doing much better without adding significant complication or cost during construction. The problem is that many people – both in the construction industry and in the public – don’t even know that there is a problem. They are resistant to change because change takes money and energy, and a lot of people simply don’t like change.
So if you are offering a “new” service that interferes with the old way of doing things, how do you get the word out there? How do you market a product or service to a solution when people don’t even know that there is a problem? That’s a tough nut to crack.
This is why I embarked on a journey to both show the problem and help people solve it in their own circumstance. Basically I simplified the problems that a building owner or operator may be concerned about (if they are aware of this information) and applied to housing because everyone needs a place to live… right?
If you think about it, the average person has a lot more incentive to learn how to save money and live more comfortably in their own home than in a place that they work. Also a home is a much more simple system than a commercial building which made writing the book much easier. 🙂
The science behind buildings doesn’t have to be terribly complicated, but it’s also not common knowledge either. In other words, if you work in a cold, drafty or uncomfortable office or building, there probably isn’t much that you can do about it other than complain unless you are the building manager. But even then do you have the training to know what’s going on? If you’ve read my book, you should have a much better idea as to why you are experiencing discomfort and have an idea of how to solve these issues.
If you do work in an uncomfortable situation, I can help you be more comfortable while helping your building operations staff to make the most out of their facility. If you or your coworkers aren’t comfortable, please send this message on to the maintenance department so that I can help them Future Proof your work place with my consulting services. I started FutureProofMyBuilding.com because I know that it’s important to show the public that we can do better, but now it’s time for me to do what I do best and use my skills to make this happen. Perhaps I can help your company Future Proof your work place or new development.
The more examples there are of people and businesses doing the right thing, the more likely others will follow. That’s the thing about leadership, you need to stick your neck out a bit which involves risk, but if you are smart and you have the right people involved, you end up on top and can show off your accomplishments. I’d love to help you achieve more with regards to sustainability and show off what your company is doing to build a better world.
