Abundance is our Future

Abundance cover The book “Abundance” by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler is a fantastic and inspiring read. As an engineer and entrepreneur I believe that every decision maker in every industry should read this book. In it and in this great video you’ll see that the world is changing much faster than anyone can truly comprehend. Because of this rapid rate of change, we must let go of our current way of thinking. We must realize that the decisions we make today have an impact that can last a very long time. This is particularly true while designing and building the assets of our society such as our homes, buildings and infrastructure. This book is a wake-up call to the fact that the conditions of the very near future will not be the same as the conditions of today or the seemingly recent past.

As human beings we tend to measure progress and project into the future based on our past experiences and knowledge. This is because for the majority of human history we’ve noticed change happen at a seemingly slow pace. This fools us into thinking that we live in a linear world. The new reality is that with every innovation we experience many more innovations that were previously unimaginable.

What does this have to do with an energy-efficient, green, sustainable and Future Proof™ home? Well for one, we can no longer pretend that we should be doing things the same way we always have. As human beings we tend to find things that work and then stick with those methods and ideas. The reality is that this mentality has caused us to to create a great level of destruction on the planet while clinging to unsustainable business models based on scarcity. But by reversing this mentality, seeking opportunity, making use of our current waste streams and considering the future when planning and building now, we truly can Future Proof our society and create a world of abundance.
